If you are looking to open a new travel agency, there are a couple of areas of which you must research before you consider joining a travel franchise group.

The three main areas to consider are briefly outlined below.

* Every travel agency must have a licensed travel agent responsible for trading. To obtain a travel agents licence, there are a number of criteria, of which you can find out details by contacting the Department of Fair Trading in your state.

* You will also need to investigate IATA certification either by telephone
02 9249 6888 or at www.iata.org.

* I would also recommend that you look on the Travel Compensation Fund (TCF) website at www.tcf.org.au. To operate, you will need to have TCF certification. The website will explain the need for such a certification and how it works.
